Day I - Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon, Ta Prohm, Small Circuit and Phnom Bakheng Hill Sunset or Pre Rup Temple Sunset

Angkor Thom city complex
– you will be met and welcomed by our English speaking guide at your preferred pick-up location and then transfer onward to visit the Great City of Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman VII. This city is surrounded by an 8m high wall; each side of the city is 3 kilometers long. It draws a perfect square you access this town through 5 gates, 4 of them represent the cardinal points and the 5th one the Victory Gate was the one leading directly to the Royal Palace area.

You will arrive via the South Gate, an impressive stone gate carved with Elephants and 4 giant faces. On each side is a row of 54 gods or demons holding the sacred Naga snake.

After passing through the South Gate, you will go down along this shady road to the Bayon temple. This temple lies exactly in the center of the city. The particularity of this monument is the 54 towers representing the 54 provinces of the then Great Khmer Empire. Each tower has 4 faces. This is the only temple in Cambodia depicting scenes of the everyday life at the time of the empire.

From the Bayon continue by walk to the Baphoun recently re-opened to the public. There you will pass by the Phimeanakas the location of the Royal Palace. The only remaining are a pond and a temple. The palace was made of wood and did not survive the time and the wars.

Then continue to the Terrace of the Elephants. This Terrace was the place where the parade was done for the king. Next is the Terrace of the Leper King, depicting the water world.

Ta Prohm overgrown temple – continues transfer to Ta Prohm - one of the most popular temples of the Angkor Complex. This temple was built in the memory of the King Jayavarman VII’s mother. When found by the French conservators at the end of the 19th century, they deliberately left this temple in the same condition as it was discovered, overgrown by strangler fig and silk-cotton trees, giving the temple a mystical and romantic appeal.

Your visit will include Banteay Kdei, a Buddhist monastery from the late 12th century, Srah Srang, also known as the “pool of ablutions”, the identical twin temples of Tommanon and Chaosay Tevoda, Ta Keo and Krovan temple.

Lunch at local restaurant (at your own costs)

Angkor Wat – continue visit the magnificent temple of Angkor Wat, built by Suryavarman II in early 12th century. Angkor Wat is constructed following the model of the temple mountain symbolizing the mount Merou, home of the gods, considered as the masterpiece of the Khmer architecture. This Vishnuite temple is the King’s funerary temple that is why the temple is oriented to the west. Inside the temple the walls are covered by carvings and bas-reliefs depicting the Hindu mythology and the wars Suryavarman II made during his reign. As well Angkor Wat is well known for the 1800 Apsara dancers decorating the all temple. But like most say, it takes a life time to discover all the wonders of this temple.

Return to Siem Reap after watching sunset at Phnom Bakheng Hill. Dominating the flat landscape, this 10th Century mountain temple is the most popular spot in the area to watch a classic sunset over Angkor Wat and the surrounding forest or

Watching sunset at Pre Rup temple, a Hindu temple, built as the state temple of king Rajendravarman and dedicated in 961. It is a temple mountain of combined brick, laterite and sandstone construction. The temple’s name is a comparatively modern one meaning "turn the body". This reflects the common belief among Cambodians that funerals were conducted at the temple, with the ashes of the body being ritually rotated in different directions as the service progressed.

During the night of your stay in Siem Reap, you can enjoy Siem Reap nightlife, night markets, foods and other fun activities in Siem Reap downtown, Pub Street areas and city formerly French colonial head quarter.

Overnight at your hotel in Siem Reap.

Day II - Angkor Wat Sunrise, Banteay Srei, Kbal Speak River of 1000 Lingam, Banteay Samre and Grand Circuit

Angkor Wat sunrise
- pick up at 5am for viewing the picturesque sunrise at Angkor Wat.

Return to hotel for breakfast

Banteay Srei - after breakfast at your hotel, depart for an excursion to visit Banteay Srei, made of pink sandstone and is one of the smallest temple you can visit but one of the most beautiful as well. Built in 967 AD by a guru to Jayavarman V, it showcases the most exquisite, deep and complex carvings in all Khmer architectures. As well the carvings and bas-relief are in a perfect condition although being here for more than millenary.

Kbal Spean waterfall - continue to the original “River of a Thousand Lingas” Kbal Spean is and intricately carved riverbed deep in the foothills the Cambodian jungle. Lingas are phallic representations sacred to Hinduism as symbols of fertility, and hundreds of them are carved into the rock here, as are several carvings of Gods and animals above the small waterfall.  The area was only rediscovered in 1969 when French researcher Jean Boulbet was shown the carvings by a local hermit. Kbal Spean lies 50Km northeast of Siem Reap 18Km from Banteay Srei on a dirt road. It takes from 1-2 hours to get there from Siem Reap.

Lunch at local restaurant (at your own costs)

On the way back to Siem Reap, visit an isolated temple of Banteay Samre. Situated on the eastern edge of the Angkor complex, this temple is very similar to Angkor Wat. The structure with its typical lotus flowers shaped tower but has very compact proportions. This temple was built during the best period of the Khmer architecture and its condition is almost perfect.

Grand Circuit - explore the highlights of the Grand Circuit, like the overgrown Preah Khan temple and Neak Poan with its artificial lakes. Continue to East Mebon temple and return to Siem Reap after viewing sunset at The Pre Rup Temple.

During the night of your stay in Siem Reap, you can enjoy Siem Reap nightlife, night markets, foods and other fun activities in Siem Reap downtown, Pub Street areas and city formerly French colonial head quarter.

Overnight at your hotel in Siem Reap.

Day III - Beng Melea and Rolous Group

Beng Melea - in the morning, after breafast at the hotel, pick up and transfer for an excursion to Beng Melea. Sprawling jungle temple covering over one square kilometer, the temple is largely overrun by vegetation and very lightly touristed, giving it an adventours, ‘lost temple’ feel. Photographers: trees growing from the broken towers and galleries offer some of the best ‘tree in temple’ shots aside from Ta Prohm. Constructed in a distinctly Angkor Wat style under the same king that built Angkor Wat, Beng Melea preceded and may have served as a prototype of sorts for Angkor Wat. Though there are some lintel and doorway carving, there are no bas-relief and the carvings are comparatively sparse. When the temple was active, the walls may have been covered, painted or had frescos. In its time, Beng Melea was at the crossroads of several major highways that ran to Angkor, Koh Ker, Preah Vihear (in northern Cambodia) and northern Vietnam.

Lunch at local restaurant (at your own costs)

Rolous group - continues visit Rolous group, consists of three temples of Preah Ko, Bakong and Lolei.

Preah Ko, six towers displaying set on a platform, all beautifully preserved carvings. Originally surrounded by walls and gopuras of which only vestiges remain. Preah Ko was one of the first major temples of the empire at the early Khmer capital of Hariharalaya. Preah Ko (Sacred Bull) derives its names from the statues of bulls at the front of the central towers.

Bakong, the most impressive member of the Rolous Group, sitting at the center of the first Angkorian Capital, Hariharalaya, stands 15 meters tall and is 650x850m at the outer wall.

Lolei, ruins of an island-temple built in the middle of a now day baray, Indrataka, the first large-scale baray constructed by a Khmer King. Lolei consists of four brick towers on a double laterite platform.

Then it's time for shopping at the Artisans d'Angkor, where you can observe young Cambodians being trained in the making of traditional crafts.

During the night of your stay in Siem Reap, you can enjoy Siem Reap nightlife, night markets, foods and other fun activities in Siem Reap downtown, Pub Street areas and city formerly French colonial head quarter.

Return and drop you off at your preferred destination.

Personalized tour that exceeded our high expectations!

We had visited Siem Reap before using Sophoan's firm. This time we asked for a personalised tour of Cambodia covering Phnom Penh, Battambang and our favourites in Angkor and beyond. Sophoan's descriptions in Phnom Penh will stay with us for life and his personal experiences made it all very real. We had a very specific tour of Angkor, but he breathed new life into our personal favourites and was knowledgeable about the new locations too - Beng Melea is definitely worth the trip! We had a great time and Sophoan definitely played his part in that. We could not recommend him highly enough.

Best tour ever thanks to Sophoan!

We only had a limited amount of time in Cambodia so we booked the 3 day/2 night tour through Cambodia Travel Trails. I cannot say enough good things about the tour and it was thanks to Sophoan that we had such an amazing experience.

He was kind, thoughtful and professional throughout, the sights themselves are amazing but Sophoan's knowledge really brought it alive for us. He is extremely knowledgeable and always had interesting facts about the monuments, history, local plants and animals which we would have missed out on if we'd chosen to "go it alone".

I would definitely recommend this company and cannot stress enough what a great time we had in Cambodia and it was thanks to Sophoan's friendly, informative tour that we were able to get so much out of the time we spent in Cambodia.

He really went above and beyond, nothing was too much trouble for him. He even accompanied us back to our hotel in Kanchanaburi (about a 12 hour drive) to make sure we got back safely. If you are planning a trip to Cambodia, definitely book a tour with Sophoan.

GREAT TRIP TO ANGKOR WAT WITH A WONDERFUL GUIDE - POAN

I and my wife went Siem Reap to visit Angkor Wat. It has been my wish for a long time to visit the temples of Angkor Wat. Finally we were able to visit in December 2006. We spent 4 days. The tour was arranged by Apsara Tours. We reached flew from Bangkok to Siem Reap on 11th December 2006 about 9.30 am. Mr. Reth Sophoin was there to receive us and took us to the hotel. At the hotel, he gave us a briefing about Angkor Wat and said that he would come at 2.00 pm to take us to the first part of the tour covering several temples Angkor Thom, Royal palace, Terrace of Elephants etc. At the first meeting itself, introduced himself at Poan as it was easy to call. From the beginning his narration in English about each place was excellent. We were expecting some one with broken English and poor knowledge of intricacies of Hindu Mythology and History. He is very professional in his narrations. Coming from India, we have a good knowledge of Hindu Mythology. We were pleasantly surprised to hear from Poan the various stories about Hindu goods. His knowledge is so good that he had pointed out and identified all the Gods (there are several thousands of them), even the minor ones. At Angkor Wat I was particularly impressed with his narration of war of Kurukshetra and Bhishma on bed of arrows awaiting for Uttarayan (when sun starts moving north). He explained very well the significance of that.

At each temple we visited, he had pointed out smaller details which we would have missed, but for the professional guidance of Poan. Each day he was on time and we had never waited for his arrival. This shows his professional etiquette and dedication to his work. During the visits to various temples, we could overhear the narration of other guides, particularly to western tourists, where there were several inaccuracies in their stories, sounded like they could get away with any story line. Poan was not like that. He was always eager to learn more about the Mythological stories depicted on the walls of Angkor Wat. He was receptive to the information given by us and sure enough he had incorporated in his narrations. He is a very professional and thorough gentleman. Subsequently, I have recommended him as a guide, when my sister and brother-in-law as well as my niece family when they visited Angkor Wat. Everyone’s response was same – superb knowledge excellent presentation and friendly advice on shopping and other activities. I have no hesitation to recommend him to any my friends. In short he is best guide in Angkor Wat. I would give him 5 STARS. K S RAGHAVAN, HYDERABAD, INDIA

Terrific Guide for your Cambodia Tour

Poan was a terrific guide while we were in Cambodia for about 4 days a couple of years ago (TA calendar doesn't go back more than one year). We had been referred to him by a friend here in San Francisco, so we made general arrangements for his guiding service while were still at home and then fleshed out the details with him after we arrived in Cambodia. In addition to taking us to various temples in and near the Angkor Wat complex, we also arranged to see a more remote and less restored temple (Beng Mealea) as well as take a day trip to the Tonle Sap, where we took a longboat ride through the floating villages.

We truly enjoyed spending our days with Poan, not just because he is a great guide and has a wealth of knowledge about this area, but also because his is just a fine individual. I also appreciated his skill as a driver, as we spent considerable time in the car getting to the more remote areas, often sharing the lane with pedestrians, bicycles and tuk-tuks. We have kept in touch with Poan since our trip, and we look forward to returning to Cambodia to both see more of the country and to reunite with him. We highly recommend him!
